What do you suction first

The new recommendation to no longer routinely suction nonvigorous infants arose from an emphasis on prevention of harm ie, delays in providing bag-mask ventilation and potential consequences of unnecessary interventions instead of the unknown benefit of the intervention of routine tracheal intubation and suctioning.

The Committee on Obstetric Practice agrees with the recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association that infants with meconium-stained amniotic fluid, regardless of whether they are vigorous or not, should no longer routinely receive intrapartum suctioning.

In addition, meconium-stained amniotic fluid is a condition that requires the notification and availability of an appropriately credentialed team Neonatal Advanced Life Support with full resuscitation skills, including endotracheal intubation 2.

Suctioning more often may cause the inside of the nose to dry out, get sore and bleed. A small suction tube is connected to a suction device. Salt water solution may be used to thin and loosen the mucus and to moisten the inside of the nose. This makes most children cough. The coughing will help bring up the mucus to the back of throat where it can be removed.

This may need to be done several times in each side of the nose. Also, your child may have a mild nosebleed. Step 3: Check portable suction equipment. Make sure all tubing connections and collection jar have a tight seal. Step 4: Place portable suction unit on a flat, dry and safe surface.

Plug suction unit to an electrical outlet. Turn unit on. Step 5: Set the suction pressure. Check pressure by turning the machine on and covering the open end of the suction line with one hand.

If the pressure does not go up, re-check all tubing connections or adjust to the correct pressure. Step 8: Connect the tubing to the suction catheter. Pick up the long connecting tubing that comes from the suction machine and attach it to the suction catheter.

Step 9: Turn on the suction machine. The person must receive extra breaths during suctioning. This is done by using the Ambu Bag. Attach the bag to the person's airway trach tube and squeeze the bag to give extra breaths.

Place the catheter into the opening of the trach. Be careful not to let it touch anything before entering the opening. Please remember that the inner cannula must always be in place when a person is suctioned.
