Creating a building to meet the demands of multiple sports was a learning experience, says Jim Hanford, project manager for Don Carlson Architects, the firm that designed the Dempsey Indoor Practice Facility.
The facility's central ceiling provides 68 feet of clearance. However, at the sidelines of the football field, the barrel-shaped ceiling drops into a foot high base that includes the running track.
To determine how high the ceiling of the base needed to be to allow quarterbacks to throw on the sideline, the architects suspended some strings and asked the Husky quarterback at that time, Brock Huard, to sling a few spirals. A multisport indoor practice facility might seem a product of modern athletic excess, but it's actually a throwback to the classic field houses of decades past, notes Lydum.
In fact, the UW's Hec Edmundson Pavilion - recently reconfigured exclusively for basketball and rechristened as the Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion - was just such a building when it opened in , Lydum notes.
In the late s, however, Hec Ed began to change. A series of remodeling projects gradually geared the field house more toward basketball, concerts and other events, limiting its multipurpose potential.
At the same time, the growth of women's sports was creating increased demand for practice space, notes Lydum. Together, those two trends drove the need for a new indoor practice venue. UW athletic staff and the architects visited several other indoor practice facilities to collect ideas for Dempsey Indoor.
That included a trip to Oregon, which despite its fierce rivalry with Washington allowed complete access to its facility, notes Lydum. All-Americans Casey Clinger and Brandon Garnica both ran sub times that would have also broken the record.
