In order to speak into a walkie-talkie, you need to push a button. This is called push-to-talk transmission PTT or press-to-transmit. As you are holding the button you are engaging the transmitter and sending your radio signal. Only one radio on the channel can transmit at any given time. However, multiple units can receive the message. Most walkie talkies operate within frequencies of 27 MHz and MHz. These are called ultra-high frequencies UHF and they are way beyond the limits of our hearing.
The communication is only short distance, however, but for those working in a large area, walkie-talkies are ideal, and they can also be used up to a few miles away too. A baby monitor is a form of a walkie-talkie, although only with one-way transmission. This means you can listen to whether your baby is asleep or awake.
You can talk if you want to, and you will be able to listen for any sounds or crackles that give you an idea of whether you need to head upstairs and see what your little one is up to. The thing is, this old-school piece of equipment still has many advantages over these methods of communication as well as some drawbacks too.
Despite their obvious flaws, walkie-talkies will always have a place, at least until technology takes another giant leap. The direct, instantaneous delivery of communication is just too convenient in certain applications.
Take security staff or the military for example. More and more walkie-talkies also come with ruggedized components so that they'll withstand the abuse of the outdoors. Many are water-resistant and some even float.
And many models now come with voice activation VOX so that you don't even have to press a button to begin speaking. All of these advances speak to the continuing relevance and usefulness of walkie-talkies. For a decades-old radio technology, that's serious longevity, especially in the face of so many new communications devices. For now, walkie-talkies and their radio-based brethren are here to stay. I had a pair of Spider-man walkie-talkies when I was kid.
We used to run around the yard with them, pretending we were coordinating epic battles happening right there in the dandelions. Usually, though, those games ended abruptly because we couldn't hear each other speaking over the ever-present static. These days, walkie-talkies are so much more sensitive and powerful that with a good-quality pair and of course, the proper GMRS license you'll be able to execute tactical maneuvers from miles away.

These features are separate in more sophisticated models. People communicating by walkie talkie must first of all ensure that they are sharing the same channel, or frequency band. Their handsets are all set to receive, so the microphone-cum-loudspeaker is set to loudspeaker. When no one is talking, the device will probably be broadcasting. When someone wishes to talk, they simply depress the push-to-talk button, forcing their loudspeaker to switch to microphone function, eliminating in the process the sound of static.
As they speak, their words are converted into radio waves and broadcast across a pre-arranged channel. Radio waves fall within the electromagnetic spectrum and therefore travel at the speed of light , miles per second and are picked up what feels like instantaneously by the other handsets, where they are converted back into vibrations or fluctuating electric currents and the speaker's voice is broadcast by the loudspeaker.
When the speaker has finished speaking, they say 'over' to let the listener know they have finished speaking, and they let go of the push-to-talk button and their handset returns to listening mode. A walkie talkie is a two-way radio, which means that unlike a normal radio, it can both send and receive information.
As the same channel is used for both functions, this means only one person can talk at a time. In order to avoid the possibility of interference from other two-way radio users, most modern systems allow use on multiple channels.
